SFFR 2013 Pride Run Sponsor Party A Huge Success!

Our 2013 Pride Run Sponsor Party and Dan’s and Bob’s house was a wonderful event!

The turnout for the party was excellent, with over 50 people at Dan Joraanstad and Bob Hermann’s home. Between checks, online donations, a special matching grant and the 50-50 drawing the total now tallies $5900. All proceeds go directly to the Larkin Street Youth Services as the cost of the party was underwritten.

Kathy Lowry, from Larkin Street, provided a moving testimonial to the work they do in helping runaway teenagers who find such a difficult time when they arrive in our enchanted city. Maybe due of her remarks, the splendid singing of West Side Story, or the fiery display of pianistic prowess featuring music of Paganni, the special matching grant of $1000 was almost matched. There is still $200 to go on matching the grant. If anybody is able to step up so the entire amount is matched that would be a great assist and also would power through the $6000 mark.

The 50-50 cash drawing generated a lot of buzz at the party. The winning ticket was purchased by Jeffrey Chu who surprised the party by turning over his $375 half of the winnings, a remarkably generous gesture. Special thanks to Jeffrey for providing a great example of generosity from the heart.

The Signature Cocktail called The Gold Medal was never disclosed as to ingredients, but was a big hit. Many smooth glasses of the Gold Medal were tucked away. Also, the caterer A Black Tie Affair did a great job with stuffed chicken, penne pasta, and all the accompaniments. Thanks also go to Barefoot Wines for providing a case of their latest offering, a carbonated version of their wines called Refresh.

A big thanks to Dominic Paris—Race Director, Mike Cao, John Brewer, and Diana Cisneros for working as volunteers at the party. Fun was had by one and all in no short degree because of the extra work these three contributed.

And finally, we give a huge thank-you to Bob and Dan for putting on such an amazing event. Their generosity and flair for putting on the wonderful party is truly appreciated by everyone in the club and Larkin Street Youth Services.

The Pride Run is almost one month away, so stay tuned and get ready for another amazing event!

Planning is going well, and we’re not only excited to raise more funds this weekend at Powerhouse (see below), we’re very happy with the design that is forming.

Interval Training with SF Track & Field Club: After an 800meter warmup jog, 8 jumping jacks, prisoner squats, seal jacks, side skips sideway runs and a few other funny drills, track members gather to discuss their preferred workout.

Could be any combination of 4x60 meter sprints, 2x800m sprints, 2x400m sprints for the short distance runners and a few 1200m sprints for the longer distance runners. If you are interested in tuning your form or have never run and need to learn the basics join the group at SFSU at Cox Stadium at 10am on Sunday morning. For more details contact Bob at callori@sbcglobal.net

Marathon and Half Marathon Training Continues!: We continued our Marathon and Half Marathon training with Robby Scalise this week. Head to our training section for info and updates on the schedule (link).

Rock Climbing at Mission Cliffs: On Wednesday, we met up at Touchstone Mission Cliffs for some rock climbing instruction and free-play time.

The board threw in an extra special perk, paying $20 of the entry fee for each of the first, 10 registered SFFR Members to sign up.

A huge thank-you to Ward, our awesome VP, for organizing the event!

Upcoming Reminders: Newcomers and Women’s Outreach Day, SFFR Fundraiser at Powerhouse, and a Pride Run Meeting:

We have some important events and reminders coming up.

Tomorrow (Saturday) morning, we have Newcomers and Women’s Outreach Day! Invite your friends along to come check out the club and make sure to be there to make everyone feel welcome!

Also happening tomorrow (evening), we are having a fundraiser at Powerhouse around 10:00PM with jello shots, contests, and fun. Full details here (link). The link has a link to the facebook event page as well, so you can invite additional friends from there and help spread the word. If you are interested in being a jello shot server, send an email to president@sffr.org

There will be a Pride Run Meeting on Wednesday, June 5th, at Bob’s and Chris’ house (415 Hill Street) at 6:30PM. Come along and help make this year’s Pride Run another success! And, as always, there will be free food! We are getting into crunch time, so the more participation from members, the merrier.

Extra Tidbits:

Richard Ervais and Dennis Nix are planning a rafting trip the weekend of June 21st, 22nd, and 23. Details include: Two nights, camping, rafting in Cache Creek, 3 meals Saturday, and 2 on Sunday. Two people to a raft, so there’s no guide which makes it a lot more fun. It’s only a two a half hour drive from SF, so you come up Saturday morning if you want. Check out the website at www.cachecanyon.com. Costs for trip is $169.00. Please contact Dennis Nix  415-509-1386  or Dennis@NixCity.com to join or for questions.

That covers it for this last week.

Enjoy your weekend and see you at the runs, walks, and events!

This last week we continued 2013 Pride Run and Pride Meet Registration, enjoyed delicious food and an awesome movie at May Movie Night, feasted on a tasty bagel brunch that included complimentary massages, had a Pride Parade Float Meeting, and continued interval training with SF Track & Field Club… all in addition to our usual runs/walks!

*Seeking volunteers for the SFFR Water Station during the 2013 SF Marathon (June 16th): We are looking for people to help volunteer at our annual water station. It’s an amazing way to support runners, SFFR members, and the club, as we get some funds for showing up and helping. If you can volunteer or know anyone who might be interested, please email president@sffr.org

May Movie Night: On Friday, Erdmann treated us to a wonderful evening with home-cooked food and the film, Run Lola Run. A huge thanks to Erdmann for hosting!

Special Bagel Brunch, Massages, and Pride Parade Float Meeting: On Saturday, the 2013 Board put on another special Bagel Brunch that we free to all SFFR members. Not only was the food tasty, our amazing club sponsors, Body Awakening (link), were there giving complimentary massages and letting us know about their upcoming Yoga-Posium (see the extra tidbit section below for more info on that). We are beyond grateful for Body Awakening’s continued support of our club!

After Bagel Brunch, many of us met at the Boathouse to narrow down some design and theme ideas for the float. Our fundraising efforts are coming along nicely, and we are pleased to announce an option to donate on our homepage (link) and an additional fundraiser at Powerhouse on June 1st at 10PM (link).

Interval Training with SF Track & Field Club: On Sunday, the SF Track & Field Club met at Cox stadium to train as usual. For details on training and the Club, contact Bob at callori@sbcglobal.net.
