Special Reminder for Saturday Runs/Walks this Weekend (October 6, 2012)

As many of you may know, this weekend brings a huge variety of events around the city.

One of these events is the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, which will take place in Golden Gate Park, West of Crossover Drive. The event runs the entire weekend and starts at 11AM on Saturday.

Although our runs/walks start at 9AM, parking may be an issue, so carpool, muni, bike, run, or walk if you are able to. Muni lines that run fairly close include the N, 5, 16, 28, 29, 31, 44, and 71.

Don’t forget to stick around after for a delicious Bagel Brunch at 10AM, free to Members!

Runner Bio - Steve Benne

This week we have another great Runner Bio interview. Those of you who have had delicious Bagel Brunch should have an idea of who Steve Benne is, but here is some more personal info he is sharing with us!

Steve Benne - SF FrontRunners Member

How long have you been running with FrontRunners (SF and elsewhere) and what attracted you to the club?

Steve: I’ve been running since I was in college, but joined SF FrontRunners about 18 years ago. I had met a few members before joining and just wanted a nice group of men and women to run with and have good conversations before, during, and after our runs.

Where did you grow up and what brought you to the bay area?

Steve: I was raised in South Jersey and still go back 2-3 times a year to see my family and friends. Moving to SF happened when I had just met my first partner and we both wanted to be in the great city that made us feel welcome.

What do you do for work/during the day?

Steve: As most of you know, I am a chef/caterer. Molto Benne Catering (link) has been keeping me involved with work for over 22 years now. Once I graduated from the California Culinary Academy, my business just started to thrive.

What kind of stuff do you enjoy in your spare time?

Steve: I have 3 adorable pets: Sofie, Zoe, and Beau. They keep me fairly busy, but I have an incredible family of friends here in SF too. My book club is great with really close friends and good books… most of the time. I also swim and bike, so cross-training has been my best approach to little or no body issues.

Are you involved with any other clubs around the Bay Area or Elsewhere?

Steve: I belong to several business groups including the Golden Gate Business Association and SF Business Makers. I also belong to a diving group that has enabled me to travel all over the world and into some of the most incredible waters on the earth.

You do amazing Bagel Brunches for us every month. Can you tell us about your Catering business and how you got into it?

Steve: I have been cooking since I was a young boy, i.e., 7th or 8th grade. I also have a degree in Finance and Accounting so I did that for many years before I attended CCA in 1989. I truly love my craft and being able to make my clients’ and friends’ events work perfectly for them. With 22 years of experience, I have seen a great deal in the catering world and have done so many different types of parties, from parties for 2 to parties for 500.

What is your favorite thing to cook as of late?

Steve – I love lamb moussaka, which is an incredible Greek dish that I’ve mastered.

Yes please!

What is one of your fondest memories of FrontRunners so far?

Steve: Some of the boat cruises, the incredible camaraderie I have with many members, and the kind and warm people that make up our group.

What do you hope to see happen/change with FrontRunners in the coming months?

Steve: I believe our board has been doing a remarkable job with keeping our group as active as possible and connected to our gay and straight community.

What advice do you have for people who are healing from an injury or people who are active and want to avoid an injury?

Steve: You really need to take injuries seriously and treat them with some ice and some heat and minimal meds.

Any advice to newcomers to the club and running/fitness?

Steve: Get a feel for the members that you enjoy the most and run/talk with them to find out more about the city or all of the activities our group offers to everyone. Stay as active as you can in your youth to set you up for a life of activity. Though I am in my 50’s, I have been running, swimming, biking, and doing many other activities to keep in fairly good shape for my century mark in years to come.

Thanks, Steve, for a wonderful interview! We can’t wait to enjoy more of your delicious food and company at club events.

Stay tuned for more Runner Bios every week.

Article: Two SF FrontRunners Celebrate 25 Years Together

On March 10th, To celebrate their twenty-five years as a couple, long-time San Francisco FrontRunners David Latulippe and Ronn Seely treated their fellow FrontRunners to a champagne bagel brunch in Golden Gate Park following the Saturday morning run.

An especially large crowd of about 120 turned out for the event, which was catered by Steven Benne. David and Ronn also celebrated their tenth year as San Francisco FrontRunners.

"We just wanted to celebrate with everyone," said Ronn. "The FrontRunners have always been a part of our lives." “I thought it would be nice to thank the FrontRunners for their friendship and good to share with people who couldn’t have celebrated with us otherwise,” said David. Both Ronn and David were FrontRunners while living in New York.

The two happened to meet for the first time in a ticket line for a New York Philharmonic performance at Avery Fisher Hall in March 1987. “It was a student rush event that was offering special discounts for college students. David was still in school, and I just graduated,” said Ronn. David saw his future partner in the line with some friends and found him interesting. “I was sitting in back of him during the performance and we talked during the intermission,” said David. “We had ice cream afterward, and, by coincidence, we took the same train home back to Brooklyn.”

Mutual attraction and respect have made their relationship last. “We really like each other,” said Ronn… “We also give each other a lot of space.” David agrees -  “We’re a couple and we respect each other. We have much in common, but we have our own interests too. We don’t have to do everything together.”

The two moved to San Francisco in February 2002 after Ronn was promoted by his managers at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York. Ronn leads tour groups over the world and is also a tax consultant. David works for KALW radio as an announcer and producer. He also plays flute in three classical music ensembles in the city.

We are grateful that Ronn and David have shared their story and celebration with the club, and we wish them many wonderful years to come!

You can view a video from their celebratory Bagel Brunch here (link).

An additional thanks to Dean Takehara for the story and Bob Callori for the photos and video.
