The Week Ahead (January 13th - 19th, 2014)

Happy, sunny Monday! Here is your weekly source of all things Frontrunners coming in the days ahead! Special news and events are at the beginning of this post, and regular/reoccurring events are on the lower half.

*Please note that we are having a grace period between now and February 1st where you will still receive weekly emails from FrontRunners if you registered for the 2013 Year. This correspondence will cut off, in addition to all of your member privileges, on February 1st, unless you have renewed or joined on for the 2014 year. Because we will be sending messages to members from both 2013 and 2014, some members will receive the same email twice during this period. This period will not last long, so we thank you for your patience and look forward to amazing year!

UPCOMING SPECIAL EVENTS

Pride Run Meeting: Monday, January 13th @ 6:30 p.m. (18:30), 4096 17th Street #112 – Join us for another Pride Run meeting! We are into full planning mode now and need your help to make this year’s Pride Run a success! And, as always, free food will be provided (yay!). Full details here (link).

Board Meeting: Monday, January 13th @ 7:30 p.m. (19:30) – The 2014 Board will be holding their monthly meeting to discuss all things FrontRunners. Have feedback or ideas? Send them to board@sffr.org and they will happily discuss!

Celebration of Life for Tom Pait & Paul Williams: Sunday, January 26 @ 3-5 p.m. (15:00-17:00), Bob & Chris’s house, 415 Hill Street, SF, CA 94114 – Please attend a memorial to celebrate the lives of two long time front runners.

KP SF Half Marathon & 5K Water Station: Sunday, February 2 @ early, Golden Gate Park – Help the club raise funds with this annual community service event. Mark your calendars.

REGULAR EVENTS THIS WEEK

Tuesday Evening Walks/Runs @ 6:30 p.m. (18:30), Ferry Building – Meet at the Ferry Building for a 1-2 mile, 3 mile (5K), 4 mile (6.5K), 5 mile (8K), or hill run along Embarcadero. We typically grab dinner afterwards.

Wednesday Evening SF Track & Field Club Training @ 6:00 p.m. (18:00), McAteer High School, 555 Portola Drive – You can park on O’Shaughnessy Blvd. Bring layers, as it’s usually cold out there in the evenings. To participate in interval training and learn more details about their weekly workout, contact Bob at callori@comcast.net. See you there!

Thursday Evening Run @ 6:30 p.m. (18:00), Fitness SF Meet in the Castro for a run that will range from 3-5 miles (depending on the week/course).

Saturday Morning Walk/Run @ 9:00 a.m., Stow Lake Boathouse Meet at Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park for a 1, 2, 3 (5K), 4 (6.5K), 5 (8K) mile run/walk, as well as a cross training option that meets immediately after First Circle to go over the routine for that day. We then head to the many brunch options in the area, so ask around to see where people are going.

Sunday Long Run @ 10:00 a.m., Fitness SF – Meet in the Castro for a long run (70 to 100 minutes total, depending on the week). We typically grab brunch afterwards.

Sunday SF Track & Field Club Interval Training @ 10:00 a.m., SFSU Cox Stadium – Meet for dynamic stretching and short, efficient workouts to improve speed and endurance. Go to the SF Track & Field workouts page (link) for more info.

Weekly Recap (January 4th - 10th, 2014)

Welcome to the weekend, and just in time for a special Bagel Brunch where we get to hear from all of our 2014 Pride Run Beneficiary Nominees! Here is your dose of weekly recap!

This last week we continued registration for 2014 membership, searched for logo designs for the 2014 Pride Run, enjoyed January Movie Night, welcomed newcomers to our monthly Newcomers and Women’s Outreach Day, held a special retro run to kick off our 40th year, continued interval training with the SF Track & Field Club, and continued our Thursday Evening runs… all in addition to our usual runs/walks!

NEWS

January Movie Night!: Last Friday, Joe DeLeonardo hosted an awesome movie night. We enjoyed great food, company, and the movie, Captain America. A big thanks to Joe for hosting and to everyone who made it out! If you are interested in hosting a movie night, send an email to president@sffr.org or talk to any board member during a weekly walk/run.

SFFR 40th Anniversary Run: On Sunday, we headed to the South Windmill in Golden Gate Park for a throwback run in honor of our 40 years as a club. We donned our new and old SFFR running gear for a 5-mile run through the park!

Thursday Evening Runs Continue: Our regular Thursday Evening run in the Castro continued at 6:30PM as usual. This time, we ran up the wiggle and into the panhandle. Our Thursday runs, while still small, have a great percentage of newcomers checking out the club, so join in on the fun and help the, feel welcome. We also now have glow sticks that double our safety and coolness factors (hell yes, neon run!), so head over to Fitness SF every Thursday and try out the run!

Saturday, January 11, 2014 @ 10:00 a.m. Tomorrow (Saturday) will be our first Bagel Brunch of the year! Steve Benne of Molto Benne Catering (link) will provide a delicious array of food at only $7 per person. We will also be hearing from all of our 2014 Pride Run Beneficiary Nominees, so make sure to stick around for the speeches after 10:00AM.

Weekly Recap (December 28th, 2013 - January 3rd, 2014)

Happy 2014! Make sure you head to the first Saturday run of the year to help the new board feel welcome. Here is your dose of weekly recap!

This last week we continued registration for 2014 membership, searched for nominees and logo designs for the 2014 Pride Run, continued interval training with the SF Track & Field Club, celebrated the new year with SFFR at the New Year’s Run and Waffle Breakfast, and continued our Thursday Evening runs… all in addition to our usual runs/walks!

NEWS

2014 SFFR New Year’s Day Run and Waffle Breakfast!: On Wednesday, Our new 2014 board put on the first event of the year: The New Year’s Day Run and Waffle Breakfast!

There was a great turnout for people at the run across the Golden Gate Bridge, and the weather was fantastic!

We then headed over to Bob’s and Chris’ place for the Waffle Breakfast. People signed up for 2014 membership, enjoyed delicious food and drink, and got a friendly welcome from the new board.

A huge thanks to Bob and Chris for once again offering their home and time to the event, and to everyone who helped organize, set up, and clean up!

Thursday Evening Runs Continue: Our regular Thursday Evening run in the Castro continued at 6:30PM as usual. We ran a 3-4 mile course around Castro, Duboce Park, and Dolores Park. We also now have glow sticks that double our safety and coolness factors (hell yes, neon run!), so head over to Fitness SF every Thursday and try out the run!

January Movie Night: Tonight (Friday) is January Movie Night! Joe DeLeonardo will be hosting and the movie will be Captain America. Head here for all the info (link). Cost will be $5 per person and it’s BYOB. See you there!

Newcomers and Women’s Outreach Day: Tomorrow (Saturday) is Newcomers and Women’s Outreach Day. Invite newbies along to check out the club, and help make them feel welcome.

40th Anniversary Run: On Sunday, we will have the first of many SFFR 40th Anniversary celebrations with a retro run starting at the South Windmill in Golden Gate Park at 10:00AM. Make sure to wear your SFFR swag. Full details here (link). Hope you can make it!

Interval Training with SF Track & Field Club Continues and they have a new website!: SF Track and Field Club has redesigned their website, so check it out: www.sftrackandfield.com. If you do not plan to attend the special SF FrontRunners run at Golden Gate park this Sunday, you might want to start your new year by attending practice at SFSU Cox Stadium at 10am for some stretching and interval workouts as demonstrated by Coach Chris Goodwin who is doing a body twist in the photo below.

Other exercises will include split and prisoner squats, flings, wide outs, full superman, roll overs, scorpion, iron cross…and more. Well you get the picture, lots of stretches to keep your body toned. Remember that the Gay games sports fee will increase $10 after Tuesday, Jan 7, 2014. Questions about track? Tuesday Evening Runs Resume: The holidays are over! Head to the Ferry Building every Tuesday evening at 6:30 for a 1-2 walk or 3-5 mile run, usually followed by dinner!

*2014 Pride Run - Beneficiary Nominees and Logo Competition: We need your help to make the Pride Run a success! We are now taking nominees for the 2014 beneficiary. The deadline to submit a nominee is January 1st, 2014. If you have any nominees in mind, send them (and links to websites) to president@sffr.org and racedirector@sfpriderun.org … We are also looking for a logo for the 35th Annual Pride Run, and need all logo submissions by January 31st, 2014. The winning design will be featured on our promotional materials and race garment/bag.

*SFFR 40th Anniversary Run: On the first Sunday of January (5th), we will skip our usual Sunday Long Run and instead have a special throw-back run to begin the celebration of our 40 years as San Francisco FrontRunners! For info on the event, head here (link).

*SFFR Club Survey: Our incoming board sent all members a survey about possible changes and events for next year. Please take the time to voice your thoughts by filling it out. You can also nominate a beneficiary for the 2014 Pride Run in the survey. If you did not receive the survey, check your junk email folder, or send an email to president@sffr.org

-Christmas Day Run! - Wednesday, December 25th - McLaren Lodge in Golden Gate Park (Oak/Fell at Stanyan) - 10:00AM: Bob and Jeff are hosting our annual Christmas Day Run! Meet in front of the McLaren Lodge at 10:00AM for a 3-5 mile run. Hope you can make it!

-SFFR Evening with the Kinsey Sicks - Saturday, December 28th - Castro Theater - 8:00PM: Join your fellow SFFR members for an evening with the Kinsey Sicks! Full details, including how to purchase tickets, here (link). See you there!

Get ready for a heat wave! It might even get into the low 60’s this weekend. I’ll take that over the 40’s we had last week. Here is your dose of weekly recap!

This last week we had our monthly Newcomers and Women’s Outreach Day, celebrated a fantastic year during our End of the Year Party, announced our 2014 Board, continued interval training with SF Track & Field Club, began registration for 2014 Members, and had our first 2014 Pride Run Meeting… all in addition to our usual runs/walks!

Newcomers and Women’s Outreach Day: Last Saturday, we welcomed all newbies to our regular walks/runs. As always, feel free to invite people along to check out the club and also help make newcomers feel welcome!

2013 SFFR End of the Year Party!: Saturday evening brought back our annual Year-End event!

We had 135 FrontRunners and friends celebrate our 2013 year at the LGBT Center on the top floor. We enjoyed a fun photo booth (view all the photos taken here (link)), delicious catering from A Black Tie Affair, an open bar with 2 signature cocktails, and music from a DJ.

We topped it off with the annual awards and announcing the new board.

A huge thanks to everyone who made it to the party and to everyone who helped make it a huge success!

Training continues with SF Track & Field Club: Since the track was filled with women’s soccer practice last Sunday at Cox Stadium at SFSU, the SF Track and Field Club members held interval training practice at the open field at Font & Tapia.

Jon Griswold, who has been a FrontRunner regular for several weeks, joined the group for a modified practice session which included running from a central location to 4 designated corner points where each teammate performed various interval training stretching routines. Each practice session started and ended with 2 laps around the artificial grass field. To join them, just show up or contact Bob at callori@comcast.net.

2014 Pride Run Meeting and Announcements: We have some important announcements and recaps about next year’s 2014 Pride Run:
-Beneficiary nominations: Due by January 1st, 2014. Speeches by nominated organizations will happen during the January Bagel Brunch.
-Pride Run Logo Competition: Get those cogs churning and creative juices flowing. We want you to design our 2014 Pride Run logo. The winner will be selected by the club. Designs are due by January 31st. For some inspiration, check out our club history: http://www.sffr.org/page/show/477666-history
-Pride Run Planning meeting: We had our first meeting on Tuesday at Bob’s and Chris’ home. Attendees: John Brewer, Bob Calori, Joe Deleonardo, Garrett Hayashida & Dominic Paris. This last week we began voting on our 2014 Board, enjoyed some yummy snacks during our Saturday walks/runs, continued interval training with SF Track & Field Club, went to a movie matinee, and held our Annual Thanksgiving Day Run… all in addition to our usual runs/walks!

Tickets for the End of the Year Party are still available here (link)! There is a difference in price between members and non-members, so consider joining and enjoying the discounts and perks of membership! We are down to less than 15 tickets, and you will not be able to purchase tickets after December 2nd, so hurry up!

*2014 Board Elections: We heard from our 2014 Board candidates on Saturday during the special Bagel Brunch, and also posted messages from each of them on our site this week (link). All registered members have received a ballot for voting. We will announce the new board during the End of the Year Party on December 7th.

*2014 Pride Run Meeting/Beneficiary Announcements!: The 35th Annual Pride run will be held on 28-June-2014.

Our first Pride Run meeting is on December 9th at 415 Hill Street at 6:30PM!

We need your help to make the Pride Run a success! What will we be doing? In short we are going to plan some parties and have fun doing it. If you would like to volunteer or just learn more about what we are doing please come to one of our meetings, ask us for a conference call number if you cannot physically make it, or you may also join our group here: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/san-francisco-frontrunners-pride-run

The group will be home to meeting minutes, FAQs, resource lists, to-do lists, etc. Don’t worry you can leave the group at any time.  We hope to seeing you soon!

*Exciting News!: You can now check-in to our Saturday Walks/Runs using your smart phones! Thanks to some help from Michael Long, you can new use Facebook to check-in when you are at the Saturday Walks/Runs. It’s a great way to help promote the club and also brag to your friends who are too lazy to get up! Thanks to Michael for setting this up, and stay tuned for check-in options for the Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday walks/runs!

ips Snacks at Saturday Walks/Runs: Last Saturday, we received some delicious snack samples from ips (link). The snacks were quickly devoured by everyone. A big thanks to ips for thinking of us and sending them our way!

Training continues with SF Track & Field Club: Last Sunday was another warm, sunny day at the track encouraging the team to do lots of stretching exercises followed by some very slow 600-500-400-300 sprints. Since it is early in the season, concentration is on endurance and not speed. Great time to build a good base for any upcoming full or half marathons.

SFFR November Movie Matinee: Last Sunday, we bucked the trend of our usual movie nights, and went out to a matinee of Hunger Games: Catching Fire. We got there early to save seats for friends, and then enjoyed snacks while we watched the film. A big thanks to everyone who made it, and to Jason and Rob for helping out!

Annual SFFR Thanksgiving Day Run: On Thanksgiving Morning, we met in front of McLaren Lodge for a 3-5 mile run. There was a great turnout!

Training continues with SF Track & Field Club: On Sunday, SFFR, Brian Hill, joined the group for some interval training. If your inclined to participate and check out the group, head over to SFSU at 10am or contact Bob at callori@comcast.net for details. Everyone is welcome to join for some basic low- to high-intensity exercise workouts interspersed with rest or relief periods.

Tomorrow (Saturday), we have a special Bagel Brunch put on by the 2013 Board. It will be free to all registered members and newcomers (yay!) and $5 for everyone else. We will also get a chance to hear from the 2014 candidates! Finally, we’ll have complimentary massages from our awesome club sponsor, Body Awakening: Wellness Arts (link). This weekend, Bay Area Rainbow Symphony has 2 concerts on Saturday and Sunday with a guest conductor. Full info here (link).

Also weekend, join your fellow runners, Robert Chan and Chris Garigliano, as they perform Rachmaninoff’s “All Night Vigil” with the Golden Gate Men’s Chorus and the SF Choral Society. This is a choral concert featuring 215 unaccompanied voices at the glorious St. Ignatius Church. This a cappella masterpiece is among Rachmaninoff’s finest accomplishments. -Special Board Bagel Brunch and 2014 Election Speeches! - Saturday, November 16th - Stow Lake Area - 10:00AM: The 2013 Board will be putting on a tasty brunch that will be free to registered members and $5 for everyone else. We’ll also be hearing from our 2014 Board candidates, so make sure you are there to hear and support them!

-Sunday Long Run Brunch - Sunday, November 17th - 471 Noe Street - 11:15AM: Meet up for a brunch after the Sunday Long Run in the Castro! -Wednesday Evening SF Track & Field Club Training - 6:00PM: Meet at McAteer High school, located at 555 Portola Drive. You can park on O’Shaughnessy Blvd. Bring layers, as it’s usually cold out there in the evenings. To participate in interval training and learn more details about their weekly workout, contact Bob at callori@comcast.net. See you there!

-Thursday Evening Run - 6:30PM: Meet at Fitness SF (Market and Noe) in the Castro for a run that will range from 3-5 miles (depending on the week/course).

-Saturday Morning Walk/Run - 9:00AM: Meet at Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park for a 1, 2, 3 (5K), 4 (6.5K), 5 (8K) mile run/walk, as well as a cross training option that meets immediately after First Circle to go over the routine for that day. We then will skip our usual brunches for a special Bagel Brunch, where we will hear from 2014 Board Candidates (see above).

-Sunday Long Run - Meet at Fitness SF (formerly Gold’s Gym) in the Castro for a long run (70 to 100 minutes total, depending on the week). We will have a special brunch afterwards (see above).

-Sunday SF Track & Field Club Interval Training - 10:00AM: Meet at SFSU Cox Stadium for dynamic stretching and short, efficient workouts to improve speed and endurance. Go to the SF Track & Field workouts page (link) for more info.

Happy Friday! Here is your dose of weekly recap!

This last week we had a fun mixer with Tsunami and SF Track & Field Club, welcomed newcomers during our Saturday walks/runs, had our last fundraiser of the year at Powerhouse, continued interval training with SF Track & Field Club, posted the November President’s Address, had a Board meeting, and held a 2014 Election meeting… all in addition to our usual runs/walks!

Mixer with Tsunami and SF Track & Field Clubs at HiTops: Last Friday, we headed to HiTops for a mixer with Tsunami Swim Team and SF Track & Field Club. It was a fun evening, and we enjoyed drinks, snacks, and friends!

November Newcomers and Women’s Outreach Day: Last Saturday, we welcomed newbies to the club and treated them to drinks/snacks after the walks/runs. We welcome newcomers at any and all of our walks, runs, and events, so never hesitate to come check us out, or invite some along!

SFFR Fundraiser at Powerhouse: Later on Saturday, we headed to Powerhouse for our final fundraiser of the year! We’re still tallying the numbers, but both of the recent fundraisers should definitely help us set up for a great 2014 year! A big thanks to Rick Aguilar, Michael Long, and Reggie Snowden for helping make and sell jello shots, and to everyone who made it out!

Training continues with SF Track & Field Club: The “official” track season is over, so workouts are light, which is a good time to check out the club, improve your running form, and just do some stretching for general exercise.

November President’s Address Posted: The President’s Address for November is up on the site. Check it out here (link). This month, we talk about our experiences with the club, trying new things, and making the club a welcoming place for newcomers.

November Board Meeting: On Monday, the 2013 Board met for our monthly meeting to discuss all things FrontRunners. Our main topics included SFFR storage, the End of the Year Party, November and December events, and transitioning to the 2014 Board. As always, we welcome your feedback and ideas, so send them to board@sffr.org

2014 Election Meeting: On Wednesday, Bob hosted a meeting for those interested in possibly running for a spot on the 2014 Board and for Pride Run Race Director. We enjoyed snacks as we discussed the different roles and the Election Schedule. If you missed the meeting, but are still interested, simply email Bob at callori@comcast.net … A big thanks to everyone who made it, and to Diana, Bob, and Richard for helping out at the Election Nomination Committee!
