Women’s Outreach Column - September, 2013

When I joined San Francisco FrontRunners in February, I was new on the west coast, and was searching for ways to make friends. In my search, I was amazed to find that the LGBT community in San Francisco was large enough to have a running club devoted to the likes of us. Wow! I thought, I’ll get to run with and meet other Lesbians.

My first run was a Saturday morning. I was a little nervous, because, while I had been running for the past thirty years, I had never joined a club. I hadn’t had formal instruction; running was primarily a convenient way for me to stay in shape.

As I parked the car I could see a large crowd of people gathered in front of the boathouse. I walked toward the group; there must be about seventy five runners. Then I realized that all of the runners were men. Where were the women? Bob, Hal, and Terri were quickly at my side with friendly questions and a warm reception. In a few moments Judith emerged from the crowd and I felt relieved.

Since that Saturday I have learned that there are very few women in the club. What a tragedy. SFFR could be a strong resource for women’s running and socializing.

The officers and board are open to trying activities that would attract more women. Should we sponsor a race that would help girls and women in need? Should we have a women’s run night followed by dinner somewhere? Should our social activities include a bike ride, stand up paddling, or hiking?

Let’s get together and figure this out. I’m having a great time with the SFFR and I know it would be even better with more women.

This last week we enjoyed Bar Night at the Lexington, continued interval training with SF Track & Field Club, continued our search for volunteers for an upcoming water station event, finished an SFFR uniform order, and continued our search for SFFR memorabilia for an upcoming historical event… all in addition to our usual runs/walks!

*Important End of the Year Party Announcement - Save the Date: Our End of the Year Party is a ways away, but we have confirmed our date, which will be Saturday, December 7th! Stay tuned for more details on location, food, activities, and everything else!

*Member Month (August) continues! Member Month is here! The month-long celebration of membership is the perfect way to say thanks to everyone who has already joined, a great way to welcome newcomers, and offers a bunch of fun incentives to officially join the club!

Head to our homepage (link) for all the details on the remaining events and the perks for registered members. You will also notice that we have a 70’s theme competitive 5-mile race on Saturday, August 24th. Get your 70’s gear ready to go for that fun run!

*SFFR Uniform Order Window CLOSED!: We finished taking orders for SFFR running garments during the week. Hopefully you got your orders in before the window closed. As mentioned in previous posts/emails, there will not be another order window for at least 3-4 months.

*Volunteers Needed - JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge - September 3rd: The Corporate Challenge is back in September! SF FrontRunners volunteers at the event each year, and we still need around 10 people to help out this year. If you are available to help out, or know anyone who might be, please send an email to president@sffr.org

Member Month Bar Night: Last Friday, we headed to the Mission for an awesome bar night at The Lexington!

It was a great opportunity to have fun with our SFFR women and to get away from the Castro for a fun evening.

image

A huge thank-you to everyone who made it, and to Judith and Susan for helping host the event!

Training continues with SF Track & Field Club: The sunny, warm weather last Sunday encouraged some barefoot interval training.

image

Everyone discarded their running shoes and socks and enjoyed jumping jacks, sideway runs, lunges, gate swings and more on the cool grass at SFSU Cox Stadium. Then the team split into two groups with running some 100m sprints and another 200m sprints. To join them, just show up at 10am or contact Bob at callori@sbcglobal.net

SFFR Memorabilia needed for an upcoming historical event!: FrontRunners Bob and Marcus are still busy gathering memorabilia for the LGBT event, Out of the Past: LGBT History in San Francisco (@ the Old Mint, 88 5th St), on Thursday, September 5th, from 6pm - 10pm. If you would like to lend any items of interest to the exhibit, please contact Bob at callori@sbcglobal.net.
